How are head lice spread?
Head lice are primarily spread through head-to-head contact. Only about 2% of cases of head lice are spread from shared items, etc. hats, brushes.
Who is at risk of getting a case of head lice?
No one is immune from head lice. It’s a contact issue. If you have contact with an infected person, you can get it. We are aware of cases on people from as young as 9 days to as old as 98 years old.
How big are head lice?
They vary in size from 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch, approximately the size of a sesame seed.
How do I know if it is an egg?
Eggs, also known as nits, are firmly attached to the hair shaft with a glue secreted by the bug. The eggs are usually found very close to the scalp.
How long does it take for a nit to hatch?
Seven to ten days
How many eggs can a single louse lay?
A female can lay over 100 eggs (nits) in their lifetime.
Why am I only seeing eggs?
Lice move quickly and shy away from light during a head check.
What color is a louse?
When they hatch head lice are clear but they quickly develop a reddish brown color after feeding off the head. Their color often is various shades of brown.
Can head lice hop, jump, or fly?
No, they are crawling insects and have six legs equipped with claws to grasp the hair.
Can my dog or cat get head lice?
No, head lice can only live on a human head.
How long do head lice live?
An adult head louse can live for up to 30 days.
